The brain is like a sponge with a trillion electrical connections going on every minute 24/7. Part of what makes the electrical charges in the brain work properly is a proper balance of hormones and neurotransmitters. When people have too much cortisol (a hormone) or too little serotonin or other such imbalances, this can lead to chronic/recurrent/severe depression.
