Of course, all this talk of loving one's self is all very well and good, but even if we give ourselves permission to pursue self-love...how, exactly, do we go about it? So let us ask you -- are you paying attention to yourself? -- what do you love most easily? Music? Ice-cream? Your mother? The sunrise? Grace loves chocolate. "As a child, my favorite book was The Little Mermaid. Not for the story, which was fine, but for the wonderful pictures. They were photographs of little dolls. One picture in particular I adored -- I still love it, now, for the memories. It shows the little mermaid dancing at the prince's wedding. On the table between the prince and princess are little glass goblets of wine and a plates of shiny chocolate bars. I would stare at the bars and think about how yummy they would be, about how great it would be to live as a princess and eat chocolate like that." These days, Grace makes chocolate truffles and is reading a book on chocolate decorating. "It's quite an art," she says, "even before you eat it." And so when Gracie and I ask her why she loves chocolate, she responds, "It looks as good as it tastes." In short, she loves it because it gives her pleasure. Even better, she says, it's a pleasure she can give to others. |
